Alcohol

Alcohol consumption can seriously derail your weight loss efforts, and in addition, binges can lead to accidents, brawls, divorce and even an increased risk of cancer – its not to be abused !

We must not lose sight of the fact that alcohol is a toxin, its literally a poison. We are constantly informed that red wine is good for us at it contains resveratrol, however this anti-aging compound comes from the grapes – try eating a dozen grapes instead of a glass of wine for this benefit.

As far as weight management is concerned, alcoholic calories (which have no nutritional value), are the first to burn as you try to drop some weight, as alcohol is a poison, the body works quickly to metabolise the alcohol through oxidation – this detoxifies and removes the alcohol from the bloodstream before it damages organs and tissues.

Regarding weight loss, alcohol destroys your efforts by contributing empty calories and increasing appetite. These effects are significant even with whats commonly considered 'moderate' drinking such as one or two glasses of wine or one or two beers daily.

I encourage the odd glass of wine throughout the week to help 'relax' after a stressful day but recommend this is undertaken without the consumption of other calories to assist in your weight loss goals.
